This is the first "modern" version of Hotel. The design is typically '80s with a lot of neons and stuff like that.
Now the dimensions of the box are about half of the 1974 edition, thanks to the fact that the table is folded in two. Everything has been redesigned, even money, entrances (now they look like a real entrance of an hotel), dice (now region-free without any text) and cars (now the shape reminds a Porsche).
One of the biggest step forward was the new buildings. The design was very well done, the version sold in Europe nowadays still include the same buildings.
This is the most successful version of the game, even because it was translated in several European languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek and Dutch. With a great worldwide promotion it gained a lot of fame between children and adults.
This edition has been released in the same year in two different editions, which can be easily identified by the box: in the first release the "HOTEL" logo is blue, in the second release is light blue and covered with a bright silver paint. There are also small differences that you can see in the table below. The first release is more rare.
Trivia: In Italy, BIM BUM BAM (a famous kids TV show at that time), included the game GIANT HOTEL. The whole set was built with the items of the boardgame Hotel, rebuilt to person size. It featured a short game played by kids with a simple version of the rules of Hotel.
